It doesn't seem to grab rare resources much, if at all. Would be nice if you saw a gold/silver rocknose but didn't bring a pick with you, but I dunno. Doesn’t grab as much star metal as with a pick, but yes it works on it without blowing it up. It does seem to harvest a lot more of other resources though (tried it in the crystal cave)

Never count on them to do anything in a purge. I agree, the gazelle, camel and caravan elephant and rhino are great for gathering resources, the other animals, not really sure about the greater ones, are just for show and tell. I basically only use the camel. Plenty of inventory and doesn't take up way too much space.
